What Is the EQ8 US Titans 50 ETF?
Fund overview and investment objective

The EQ8 Dow Jones US Titans 50 ETF (stock code: 0827EA) is a Shariah-compliant, passively managed exchange-traded fund listed on Bursa Malaysia. It tracks the Dow Jones Islamic Market US Titans 50 Index — an index of the 50 largest US companies that pass Shariah screening criteria.

Passively managed and listed on Bursa Malaysia (formerly known as i-VCAP Management, the same company behind the original MyETF series), the fund is certified Shariah-compliant by ISRA Consultancy and approved by Malaysia's Securities Commission Shariah Advisory Council (SAC).

The ETF is denominated and traded in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) on Bursa Malaysia, meaning Malaysian investors can buy and sell it through any licensed stockbroker without needing a foreign brokerage account, foreign currency conversion, or exposure to US estate tax — unlike buying US-listed ETFs such as VOO or QQQ directly.

💡 Why This ETF Matters

Before ETFs like 0827EA existed, getting affordable, Shariah-compliant exposure to US tech giants required a foreign broker account, USD conversion, and accepting US estate tax risk. This ETF solves all three problems in one Bursa-listed instrument.

🕌 Why No Banks or Financials?

You will notice no major banks (JPMorgan, Bank of America) or conventional financial companies in the holdings. This is because Shariah screening excludes riba-based financial institutions. This is what makes the index Islamic — and also why the holdings skew heavily towards technology, healthcare, and consumer companies.

Shariah Compliance
What makes this ETF halal and who certifies it

The EQ8 US Titans 50 ETF is certified Shariah-compliant by ISRA Consultancy Sdn Bhd, a globally recognised Islamic finance research and advisory institution based in Malaysia. The fund's Shariah compliance is also endorsed by the Securities Commission Malaysia's Shariah Advisory Council (SAC).

Each company in the underlying DJ Islamic Market US Titans 50 Index is screened using a two-stage process. Business activity screening excludes companies involved in conventional finance (riba), alcohol, tobacco, gambling, and weapons. Financial ratio screening ensures debt levels, interest income, and cash ratios remain within permissible Shariah thresholds. The index is rebalanced and re-screened quarterly.

A small income purification (tazkiyah) amount may apply to dividends, representing the portion of dividend income derived from non-compliant activities within permitted companies. Your broker or fund statement will note the purification amount if applicable — typically less than 2% of dividends received.

✅ Verification

You can verify the Shariah status of this fund at the Securities Commission Malaysia's website (sc.com.my) under the list of approved Shariah-compliant ETFs.

⚠️
Key Risks to Understand
Before you invest — know what you're accepting
💱 Currency Risk (Most Important)

This ETF holds US assets but is priced in MYR. When MYR strengthens against USD, your returns in ringgit terms are reduced even if US stocks performed well. When MYR weakens (as it has historically over long periods), your MYR returns are amplified. For a long-term investor, USD/MYR movements tend to average out, but be aware of this in the short term.

📊 Market Concentration Risk

With only 50 holdings and heavy concentration in the top 5 (Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon make up ~55% of the index), this ETF moves closely with US tech sentiment. A prolonged US tech downturn would significantly impact this ETF. This is a feature for investors who want US tech exposure — but understand the concentration before investing.

FAQ

Is 0827EA the same as investing in S&P 500?
No — but it is similar in spirit. The S&P 500 tracks 500 companies; this ETF tracks only 50. The S&P 500 includes banks and conventional financial companies; this ETF excludes them (Shariah screening). The top holdings overlap significantly — Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon are in both — but the 0827EA is more concentrated in the largest tech companies and excludes the financial sector entirely.
How does 0827EA compare to buying VOO or QQQ directly?
VOO (S&P 500) and QQQ (Nasdaq 100) are US-listed and require a foreign broker account (moomoo, Tiger, IBKR), involve USD currency conversion, and expose you to US estate tax (up to 40% on holdings over USD 60,000 at death). 0827EA is Bursa-listed, bought in MYR, and carries no US estate tax risk. VOO has a lower expense ratio (0.03%) vs 0827EA (0.475%), but the convenience and tax simplicity of 0827EA has real value for most Malaysian investors.
Does 0827EA pay dividends?
The underlying US companies in the index do pay dividends, but the EQ8 US Titans 50 ETF structure may accumulate (reinvest) dividends rather than distribute them. Check the latest official fund factsheet for the current dividend distribution policy. If dividends are paid, a small income purification amount would apply.
What happens to my ETF units if the fund manager closes down?
Your units are held in the Central Depository System (CDS) managed by Bursa Malaysia — not by the fund manager. If the fund manager were to close, the ETF would be wound down in an orderly process under SC Malaysia supervision and you would receive the NAV value of your units in cash. Your assets are legally segregated from the fund manager's assets.
Can I use EPF to invest in 0827EA?
Check EPF's i-Invest approved fund list on the EPF website. The approved list is updated periodically and not all Bursa-listed ETFs may be on it at a given time. If 0827EA is on the approved list, you can withdraw a portion of EPF Account 1 to invest in it through the i-Invest programme.
